About Memefile

Memefile is a fast, structured encyclopedia for internet memes and slang — plus a free, browser-based meme generator. We aim to be the clearest, best-sourced, and quickest-to-update place to understand any meme.

How we source memes

Every entry is researched against primary sources — the original post, video, or thread where a meme started — and cited. First-pass entries for breaking memes are marked as drafts and only promoted to confirmed after a human review checks the origin, adds sources, and sets the brand-safety flags. We dedupe against existing references and only publish when a page adds genuine value (clear origin, examples, a usable gallery).

Editorial standards

  • Named bylines and update dates on every entry.
  • At least one sourced origin claim and one media asset per page.
  • No auto-generated filler — drafts stay unindexed until they clear the bar.
  • Corrections welcome — memes evolve, and so do their pages.

The team that researches, verifies, and writes every entry. Origins are checked against primary sources (the original post, video, or thread) before an entry is marked confirmed.

DMCA & takedowns

Memes are often built on others' copyrighted images; we present them for commentary and education with attribution where possible. If you hold rights to an image and want it removed, email dmca@memefile.com with the URL and proof of ownership, and we'll act promptly. We prefer transformative and user-generated media and avoid hotlinking.
