Origin

Ermahgerd is a 2012 photo of a girl in braces excitedly holding up Goosebumps books. It reportedly went viral on Reddit, where a caption rendered her speech as if spoken with a mouth full of retainer: ‘Ermahgerd, berks!’ meaning ‘Oh my god, books!’ The girl was later identified as Maggie Goldenberger, and the photo reportedly predated its viral spread by several years. It arrived during the peak of the ‘derp’ and rage-comic era of image humor.

Meaning & usage

It expresses giddy, nerdy enthusiasm about a beloved thing, written in the signature garbled ‘ermahgerd’ accent. The template spawned a whole style of transcribing excited speech phonetically, with fans respelling any hyped statement in the same mangled, mouth-full voice.
