In a sentence

  • “The automatic logout timer is working with the opps.”
  • “My board-game opps read the rules before arriving.”

Who are “the opps”?

Opp is singular; opps is plural. The label casts someone as an adversary. In music or a serious dispute, that can mean a real enemy. In a joke, the supposed opponent may be a broken printer, an early alarm, or the friend who keeps winning a board game.

Dictionary.com describes the word as a shortening of opponent or opposition and notes that its hip-hop use predates TikTok. The alternatives matter: the evidence does not require one exclusive expansion in every speaker’s vocabulary.

Music history versus first use

Know Your Meme’s documented examples include Chief Keef’s 2011 “John Madden” and later drill recordings. These help show the expression’s circulation in music. They are not proof that a recording artist invented a term already used in speech.

This entry therefore distinguishes an early documented recording from an absolute origin. It also avoids treating contemporary joke captions as if they all carry the same stakes as the musical examples.

Original examples, ordered by context

  • “The alarm clock joined the opps.” An object becomes a comic enemy of sleeping in.
  • “My chess-club opps brought notebooks.” Opponents in a game are described dramatically.
  • “The opps saw the plan.” Without context, this sounds like an actual conflict; the word alone cannot establish what happened.

OP, meaning the original poster in a discussion, is a different abbreviation. A message addressed to OP may be referring to the person who started the thread, not an enemy.

Make the harmless conflict visible

A useful original meme setup is “Me trying to leave on time” paired with “Every zipper in the house: the opps.” The mundane obstacle explains why the hostile-sounding label is exaggerated.

Show that obstacle in the frame instead of naming a real person as an enemy. The latter can communicate a serious accusation even if the writer intended a joke. Compared with menace, opps tells us who is positioned against the speaker; menace tells us who or what is causing trouble.

Frequently asked

Is opps always about a real conflict?

No. It can describe serious adversaries or exaggerate an ordinary obstacle in a joke. Context determines which.

Is OP the same word as opp?

Usually not. OP commonly means original poster in a discussion; opp describes an opponent.
