‘Delulu’ is a clipped, sing-songy reshaping of the word ‘delusional,’ and it was born inside K-pop fan communities in the early 2010s. The earliest documented use is dated to April 6, 2014, on the fan forum OneHallyu, where it was aimed at ‘shippers’ who read a full-blown romance into a single backstage glance between two idols. For years the word stayed inside stan culture as a gentle jab at fans nursing unrealistic fantasies about their favorite performers.

To be ‘delulu’ is to be charmingly out of touch with reality — usually about romance, a long-shot crush, or a big ambition.
