Origin
Delulu is a cutesy reduplicated shortening of “delusional.” It reportedly started within K-pop fan communities (describing fans with unrealistic beliefs about idols) and broke into general Gen Z usage around 2023, helped by the rhyming catchphrase “delulu is the solulu” (delusion is the solution).
How it’s used
Unlike “delusional,” delulu is usually light and self-aware:
- Owning unrealistic optimism (“I’m delulu but I’ll get front-row tickets”),
- Encouraging bold action despite low odds (“stay delulu, send the text”), or
- Gently teasing a friend’s wishful thinking.
The “solulu” framing reframes a little delusion as motivational — believing hard enough to actually try. That positive spin is a big reason it spread beyond fandom into everyday and even workplace jokes.
