Origin

Chill Guy began as a single illustration by artist Phillip Banks, who posted the drawing online in October 2023 (4 October) with the caption: “my new character. his whole deal is he’s a chill guy that lowkey doesn’t give a f---.” The character is an anthropomorphic brown dog in a grey sweater, light rolled-up jeans and red sneakers, hands stuffed in his pockets, wearing a knowing half-smile. For roughly a year it circulated quietly with little traction.

The whole meme is the posture: hands-in-pockets nonchalance that instantly reads as unbothered. Creators paste Chill Guy over stressful scenarios — a burning kitchen, a collapsing stock chart, a looming deadline — with captions like “me handling it: just a chill guy.” It became shorthand for detachment, low-stakes confidence and letting problems roll off your back. The joke lands because the dog looks so unbothered that no surrounding chaos — literal or figurative — seems able to touch him, which made the template endlessly adaptable.

How it spread

The drawing detonated on 30 August 2024, when a TikTok user built a slideshow pairing the art with other popular memes and music; from there it tore across TikTok, Instagram and X through late 2024, racking up hundreds of thousands of uses as a reaction template, and USA Today named it one of the best memes of the year. Then came the crypto wave: an anonymous $CHILLGUY meme coin launched on Solana on 15 November 2024 without Banks’s permission and rocketed to a market cap in the region of half a billion dollars (about $580 million by 21 November), fuelled in part by a supportive post from Salvadoran president Nayib Bukele. Banks responded by registering the copyright and issuing cease-and-desist notices and takedowns, stating he would “never endorse or condone any crypto-related projects”; the coin’s value slid after the takedowns, and Banks was doxxed and briefly locked his account. He clarified that his objection was to unauthorized crypto and merchandise, not to ordinary people or brands using the character as a trend.
