Origin

The joke was born from a YouTube video uploaded on October 12, 2017 by a user named Midya, titled ‘Ultra Instinct Shaggy.’ It re-edited a fight scene of Shaggy from the animated film Scooby-Doo! Legend of the Phantosaur (2011) — in which Shaggy, briefly hypnotized into bravery, actually throws down with a biker gang — and layered on the silver-haired glow of the ‘Ultra Instinct’ transformation from Dragon Ball Super, set to that anime’s booming battle track ‘Ultimate Battle.’ The mashup recast the lanky, perpetually terrified cartoon coward as a serene, unstoppable warrior. Midya’s original upload was later deleted, but the video was reuploaded by others (notably YouTuber RoastedCurry in January 2019) and preserved on the Internet Archive.

The running bit treats Shaggy as a secretly omnipotent god who never uses more than a sliver of his true power. Fans play it completely straight for comic effect, gravely insisting that Shaggy could annihilate anyone in fiction if he ever got serious — and pleading with him not to. It is absurdist power-scaling humor: taking a children’s cartoon character and declaring him the strongest being in the universe, then quantifying cosmic events as fractions of his restraint (‘the Big Bang was caused by Shaggy using 14% of his power’).

After simmering through 2018, ‘Shaggy’s Power’ exploded in early 2019 across Reddit, Instagram, and iFunny, with a wave of fan art depicting a glowing, veiny, powered-up Shaggy. The frenzy peaked with a viral Change.org petition demanding that NetherRealm add Shaggy to the fighting game Mortal Kombat 11 as downloadable content; it reportedly gathered well over 400,000 signatures and drew winking acknowledgment from the meme community and the press. ‘Ultra Instinct Shaggy’ fan edits, comic panels, and ‘X% of his power’ captions proliferated across every major platform.
