“Blinding Lights” is a single by The Weeknd, released in late 2019 and one of the defining pop records of 2020 — a synth-driven track that went on to become one of the most commercially successful songs in chart history.

The dance was not the artist’s. On March 3, 2020, a TikTok user posted a short choreographed routine set to the song, captioned simply that they had been bored. It took over 394,600 likes within three weeks.

The routine is built for groups: three people side by side, performing a jump-heavy sequence of synchronised steps that is difficult enough to look impressive and simple enough to learn in an afternoon.

The Blinding Lights challenge was a participation trend, and its defining feature is who performed it.

It arrived in the first weeks of pandemic lockdowns, when large numbers of people were confined at home with their families and nothing to do. The result was that the routine was performed overwhelmingly by household groups — parents and children, siblings, whole families — rather than by the teenage dancers who normally drive TikTok trends.

That gave it an unusual character. Most viral dances signal that you are part of a youth culture; this one mostly signalled that you were stuck indoors with your relatives and had made the best of it.

The scale-up was extremely fast. A version on March 17, 2020 took over 2.9 million likes in a week. Major creators followed within days — one posted on March 22, 2020 taking 2.2 million likes in two days — and a family version on March 24, 2020 took 702,300 likes.

Commentary at the time made the lockdown connection explicit, with participants openly framing their videos as products of quarantine boredom.

The song’s own trajectory reinforced it. “Blinding Lights” was already climbing charts when the trend began, and the two amplified each other through spring 2020 — the song driving the dance and the dance driving the streams.
