Distracted Boyfriend

Origin

The photograph is a piece of commercial stock photography. Spanish photographer Antonio Guillem shot it on November 1, 2015 in Girona, Spain, and uploaded it to iStock under the title “Disloyal man with his girlfriend looking at another girl.” It was one image in a much larger series: Guillem shot the same three models in multiple configurations, so alternate frames exist showing the same scenario from other angles and with the roles reversed.

Nothing about it was designed to be funny. It was made to be licensed by relationship-advice articles, and for over a year that is exactly what happened.

What it means / how it’s used

The template has three labels, which is what separates it from almost every other object-labeling format:

• The boyfriend — the person or party making a choice.
• The girlfriend — the thing they should be loyal to.
• The passing woman — the tempting new thing.

That third slot is the key. Two-label formats can only compare; this one narrates a betrayal, complete with a wronged party who can see it happening. The girlfriend’s expression of disgust does as much work as the boyfriend’s head-turn.

It is used for anything with an established option and a shiny alternative: a programming language and its new competitor, a franchise and its reboot, a sensible plan and an impulse. The format also inverts cleanly — swapping which label goes where produces a completely different joke from the same picture.

How it spread

The first captioned versions appeared in non-English communities. A Turkish Facebook page posted a widely circulated version on January 30, 2017, casting Phil Collins as the boyfriend, pop music as the temptation, and prog rock as the girlfriend.

It moved through Instagram next — a February 23, 2017 post took over 28,500 likes in seven months — before hitting the English-language mainstream in August 2017. An August 21, 2017 Reddit post built around that month’s solar eclipse took 31,200+ points in 24 hours, and within days the format was everywhere.

Formal recognition followed. On April 15, 2018, Distracted Boyfriend won Meme of the Year at the 10th Shorty Awards, beating out formats including Galaxy Brain.

It also generated one of the few instances of a meme being ruled on by a regulator. On August 15, 2018, Sweden’s Advertising Ombudsman ruled unanimously that a recruitment company’s use of the image was gender-discriminatory, on the grounds that it presented women as interchangeable with a change of workplace.

Legacy / cultural impact

Distracted Boyfriend is the most recognisable object-labeling meme ever made, and probably the most recognisable meme of the 2010s outright. Its reach was wide enough that Guillem’s models became briefly identifiable public figures, and the photographer has spoken about the strangeness of a routine commercial shoot becoming a global visual reference.

It is also the standard example in any discussion of stock photography’s second life. The same qualities that make stock images useful commercially — clear staging, legible emotions, no specific context — turn out to be exactly what a meme template needs.
