Hampster Dance

Origin

The Hampster Dance was a website created reportedly in 1998 by a Canadian art student, said to have built it as part of a friendly competition over web traffic. The page showed rows of animated GIF hamsters (and a few other rodents) dancing in different styles, set to a high-pitched, sped-up loop of a snippet from the “Whistle Stop” tune in Disney’s Robin Hood. The misspelling of “hamster” as “hampster” was part of its charm. It went viral in 1999 as the link spread by email and word of mouth.

The Hampster Dance embodied the playful, low-stakes absurdity of the early web, when a single silly page could become a shared cultural moment. It is frequently cited as one of the first true “viral” websites and internet memes. The looping song became instantly recognizable, and it stood in for the whole giddy novelty of surfing the young web. People sent the link simply to make each other smile.

The song was later re-recorded and released as a novelty single credited to a group billed as Hampton the Hampster, charting in some countries around 2000. The page spawned spin-off sites, merchandise, and endless parodies built on the same grid-of-dancing-GIFs concept.
