Origin

The kitchen metaphor behind “let him cook” traces to rapper Lil B, “the BasedGod,” who built a whole vocabulary around “cooking” — his freestyle dance and creative flow — around 2010. On July 6th, 2010 he posted an instructional video laying out the “rules and regulations” of cooking, and days later, on July 14th, 2010, YouTuber Jordan Collier uploaded “LIL B BASED COOKING (LET THAT BOY COOK),” doing the stirring “cooking” dance to a Lil B track. That fan video is the earliest documented use of “let that boy cook” online. In Lil B’s usage, “to cook” meant to do your creative thing, and “let that boy cook” meant to give someone the room to do it.

What it means and how it’s used

To tell people to “let him cook” is to say: stop interrupting — this person is locked in and should be allowed to finish. “Cooking” is being on a roll; “he’s cooking” praises a hot streak; “what is he cooking?” signals curious anticipation; and “let him cook” asks for patience while it plays out. Crucially, the phrase is also used ironically: when someone is confidently doing something dumb or self-destructive, “let him cook” becomes mock encouragement — stand back and watch this go wrong. That double register — sincere hype or dry sarcasm — is a big part of its appeal.

Although the slang sat in hip-hop and Lil B fandom for years, “let him cook” surged into the mainstream around 2022-2023 through sports commentary, gaming streams, and short-form video. Twitch chat adopted it as a rallying cry when a streamer or player was in the zone, and it became a recurring caption on TikTok and YouTube edits of clutch plays and impressive runs. NBA and football fan accounts helped push it into sports vernacular, and by 2023 it was inescapable across fandoms, complete with “Let Him Cook” Twitch emotes and reaction stickers.
