It runs on a spectrum from sincere, in gaming trash-talk, to completely absurd, such as blaming unrelated life problems on a ‘skill issue’ (‘can’t wake up early? skill issue’). Because it is so deadpan and dismissive, it is most often used jokingly between friends rather than as a real insult, and it pairs naturally with put-downs like ‘git gud’ (a Dark Souls-era taunt telling players to simply improve), ‘cope,’ ‘seethe,’ ‘womp womp’ and ‘cry about it.’ The tone is the whole joke: total, unbothered confidence that the other person is the problem.

From Twitch chats, Discord servers and Reddit in 2020 and 2021, the phrase leaked into general internet argument, sports talk and everyday banter. It spawned a family of reaction images and GIF captions, including the widely shared ‘crying cat’ with ‘SKILL ISSUE’ stamped across it, that let people deliver the burn with a picture instead of a sentence. Twitch even hosts ‘SkillIssue’ chat emotes, and by 2022 the phrase had jumped fully out of gaming, showing up in sports arguments, workplace banter and news headlines about everything from politics to personal finance.
