Waluigi

Origin

Waluigi is a lanky, mustachioed rival in Nintendo’s Mario universe, introduced in 2000 in “Mario Tennis” for the Nintendo 64. He was created essentially out of necessity: the doubles-based tennis game needed a partner for Wario, so designer Fumihide Aoki (with input from Shigeru Miyamoto) built a tall, spindly foil to Luigi the way Wario is a foil to Mario. His name is usually explained as combining Luigi with the Japanese “warui” (bad); it is also widely noted as a play on “ijiwaru” (mean or spiteful). Ever since, Nintendo has kept him almost entirely in spin-offs — tennis, golf, kart racing, and party games — rather than the mainline platformers.

Waluigi’s meme identity is built almost entirely on being an afterthought. Fans ironically champion him as the ultimate underdog: a chaotic, purple-clad antihero who never gets his due, onto whom the internet projects surprising depth, tragedy, and pathos. The joke cuts both ways — he is celebrated as a “lovable loser” and mocked as filler at the same time. A cornerstone of his meme canon is the “Ladies please control yourselves” image macro, a render of Waluigi reclining seductively with a rose in his teeth, which became a template for over-the-top faux-suave posturing.

Waluigi’s fandom simmered through the 2000s and 2010s across forums, DeviantArt, and Garry’s Mod / Source Filmmaker renders, but it boiled over in 2018 with the “Smash snub.” When “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” was revealed, fans were dismayed that Waluigi appeared only as a non-playable Assist Trophy rather than a fighter. Director Masahiro Sakurai even addressed the disappointment, acknowledging Waluigi’s popularity — which only poured fuel on the fire. The moment spawned a wave of mock-outrage jokes, petitions, and tribute art, and the “Justice for Waluigi” bit spread across social media and gaming press. His absence, paradoxically, made him more beloved.

Every new Nintendo crossover reignites hope — and fresh memes — about whether Waluigi will finally get a starring role, keeping his perpetual-underdog status very much alive.
