Wellerman (Sea Shanty)

Origin

Nathan Evans, a postman from Airdrie in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, began posting folk covers and sea shanties to TikTok in mid-2020, starting with “Leave Her Johnny” in July. In late December 2020 he uploaded a clip of himself singing “Wellerman” — properly “Soon May the Wellerman Come” — a New Zealand whaling ballad generally dated to the 1860s. The song’s title refers to the ships of the Weller Bros., a trading firm whose supply vessels (“wellermen”) carried provisions to whaling crews; its plainspoken chorus, “Soon may the Wellerman come / To bring us sugar and tea and rum,” is built for call-and-response group singing. Evans’s version took off in January 2021.

The trend turned on TikTok’s Duet feature, which places a new recording alongside an existing one. Users stacked harmonies, basslines, drums, and instruments onto Evans’s lead vocal, assembling a full arrangement one layer at a time. Commentators dubbed the wave “ShantyTok” or “SeaShantyTok.” Beyond the specific song, “Wellerman” became shorthand for a very early-2021 feeling: locked-down strangers making warm, communal, low-stakes music together across a screen.

The breakout Duet came from Scottish singer Luke Taylor (@luke.the.voice), whose deep bass harmony gave the stacked version its signature bottom end; others layered in percussion and strings. Celebrities piled on — Brian May of Queen added a guitar part, and figures from Andrew Lloyd Webber to Ronan Keating weighed in. The Bristol folk group The Longest Johns, whose 2018 recording of “Wellerman” saw streaming surge during the craze, benefited too. Evans signed with Universal’s Polydor Records, released an official single on 22 January 2021, and soon quit his postal job. A dance remix by British producers 220 Kid and Billen Ted became the commercial hit, reaching No. 1 in Germany, Austria, Belgium and Switzerland and charting across Europe; the official music video landed on 8 March 2021.

Outlets from the BBC to The New York Times ran explainers, and Evans went from posting in his bedroom to performing on live television within weeks. The episode is still cited as the clearest proof that the Duet mechanic could work as a genuine collaborative-music instrument rather than just a reaction tool.
