The scene is from The Simpsons, season 12, episode “Bye, Bye, Nerdie,” which aired on March 11, 2001. Lisa Simpson is delivering a presentation on her research into bullying — she has discovered that bullies are drawn to a chemical secreted by nerds — standing beside a projector screen in front of an audience that is visibly unmoved.

The composition is the meme: a presenter, a large blank surface, and a room that does not care.

What it means / how it’s used

The screen is an exploitable. Editors replace its contents with any statement, and Lisa becomes its author — presenting a personal opinion with the full apparatus of academic research.

Its uses:

• Delivering an opinion as though it were a finding.
• Community in-jokes presented as conclusions.
• Statements the poster expects to be unpopular.
• Genuinely sincere points, made funnier by the formality.

The audience matters as much as the screen. It became one of the dominant formats of late 2018, and its single biggest post came on January 24, 2019, when a version referencing Reddit’s own mascot took 41,000+ points in 24 hours.

Its decline is unusually well documented. By January 2019 the format was heavily overused, and when Spider-Man’s Presentation appeared that month — a photograph of a schoolchild in a Spider-Man costume presenting beside a blank screen — communities adopted it explicitly as a replacement, with early posts saying so directly.

It is also a clean illustration of how formats retire. Nothing was wrong with the image; it was simply used so heavily for eight months that communities went looking for a fresher one, found it, and moved over within weeks.
