Origin

The photograph is from a school. On January 30, 2019, the Twitter account of Chingford Foundation School in London posted a picture of a pupil in a full Spider-Man costume standing at the front of a room, holding a sheet of paper, delivering a presentation to an audience — with a large blank projector screen behind them.

The post took over 3,300 retweets and 15,400 likes within a month, largely on the strength of how completely committed the image is: nobody in the photograph appears to find the costume remarkable.

What it means / how it’s used

The blank screen is the point. It is a large, flat, empty rectangle in a photograph of someone visibly explaining something — which makes it an ideal exploitable. Editors replace the screen with any statement, and Spider-Man becomes its presenter.

Its uses:

• Delivering an opinion with mock authority.
• “In conclusion” style statements summarising an argument.
• Community in-jokes presented as findings.
• Genuinely sincere statements, where the costume supplies the humour.

The costume matters more than it might seem. A person in ordinary clothes presenting a slide reads as a real claim; a person in a Spider-Man suit presenting the same slide reads as a joke that is nonetheless being made seriously. That combination is hard to get any other way.

How it spread

Adoption took roughly one day. By January 31, 2019, edited versions were circulating on Reddit, where one post took over 46,000 upvotes in its first month.

Early adopters explicitly framed it as a replacement for the Lisa Simpson presentation meme — an older format using a frame of Lisa at a projector — which had been in heavy use and was starting to feel exhausted. Spider-Man’s Presentation did the same job with a fresher image.

Through February 2019 it spread across Reddit communities of every kind, from meme subreddits to wholesome and photography ones, and settled into permanent use.

Most viral photographs of individuals are taken without consent or context; this one was published by the school itself, of a pupil who had evidently decided that a presentation was better delivered in costume, and the internet’s response has been almost entirely affectionate.
