Origin
Brainrot as internet slang took off in 2023–2024 to describe the wave of hyper-absurd, algorithm-native content — Skibidi Toilet, Italian Brainrot, the 67 chant — and the mental haze of consuming it. The concept went fully mainstream when Oxford named “brain rot” its 2024 Word of the Year.
How it’s used
Brainrot works in two registers:
- The content: “this is peak brainrot” (absurd, low-effort, gloriously dumb).
- The condition: “my attention span is fried, certified brainrot” (self-deprecating).
