Ain't Nobody Got Time for That

Origin

On April 7, 2012, a fire broke out at an apartment complex in Oklahoma City. Kimberly Wilkins — who introduced herself on camera as Sweet Brown — had stepped outside to get a soda when she smelled smoke, and got out of the three-alarm fire safely.

The local NBC affiliate KFOR-TV interviewed her the following day. Her account was vivid, fast, and delivered with complete conviction:

“I woke up to get me a cold pop, and then I thought somebody was barbecuing. I said, ‘Oh Lord Jesus, it’s a fire.’ Then I ran out… I got bronchitis. Ain’t nobody got time for that!”

The final line — an aside explaining why she did not linger — became one of the most quoted phrases of the decade.

What it means / how it’s used

The phrase dismisses something as not worth the time it would cost. It is used for:

• Refusing a chore, an errand, or an obligation.
• Declining to engage with a long argument.
• Rejecting an unnecessarily complicated process.
• Any moment where the effort plainly exceeds the reward.

Its appeal is the delivery. Wilkins is not being funny on purpose — she is explaining, urgently and sincerely, why she left a burning building rather than stopping to deal with her bronchitis. The phrase carries that urgency into contexts where nothing is at stake at all.

How it spread

The clip spread rapidly through 2012, amplified enormously by an Auto-Tune remix that set her interview to music — part of a long-running series of viral news-remix videos that had previously made hits of other local-news interviews.

Wilkins became briefly ubiquitous: she appeared in advertising, on television, and in a range of commercial contexts, and the phrase entered general American speech.

The commercial side also produced a legal dispute. In April 2013, Wilkins filed a $15 million lawsuit against Apple and others over the sale of a song built from her interview audio, arguing her likeness and words had been used commercially without permission. The case was dismissed without prejudice.

That dispute is a significant part of the story. Wilkins was an ordinary person filmed during an emergency, whose words generated substantial commercial value for other people — and the legal system offered her no straightforward way to claim any of it.

That pattern has since been widely re-examined, and Sweet Brown is one of the standard examples. The phrase is now permanently part of English; the woman who said it, escaping a fire in 2012, saw very little of what it earned.
