Overly Attached Girlfriend comes from Laina Morris’s 2012 YouTube video, a parody of Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend” that reimagined the lyrics from a possessive point of view and featured an intense, unblinking stare into the camera. The frozen, wide-eyed smile from the video was screenshotted and became a reaction face, and Morris leaned into the character in follow-up videos as it took off across the web.
