Polite Cat is a 2018 reaction image of a white-and-grey cat named Ollie whose tight-lipped, wide-eyed expression looks uncannily like a strained human smile. The photo was posted to 9GAG on June 7, 2018, under the caption “My face when someone expects me to be excited about something that I’m not excited about.” The meme got its name a few weeks later: on July 2, 2018, an Instagram screenshot of a text exchange went around in which a landlord named “Bruce” agrees to allow the cat because “he looks very polite.” Whether Ollie’s smile is real or Photoshopped has never been settled — skeptics point to the blurry mouth and oddly bent whiskers, and when the Daily Dot pressed the owner about it, the account reportedly stopped responding. The Daily Dot’s 2019 investigation into whether the grin was genuine only fueled the debate, and that lingering uncertainty became part of the meme’s charm.
