Origin

Moo Deng is a female pygmy hippopotamus born on 10 July 2024 at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Si Racha, Chonburi Province, Thailand. Her parents are Jona and Tony, and she is one of several pygmy hippos at the zoo. Her name — Thai for roughly “bouncy pork” or “jiggly piggy” — was chosen through a public poll in which around 20,000 people voted, picking “Moo Deng” over the alternatives “Moo Daeng” and “Moo Sap.” Photos and videos taken by her keeper, Atthapon Nundee, showing the glossy, round, faintly grumpy calf mid-wriggle, began circulating in the late summer of 2024.
