The format is built from a real makeup tutorial: “Male Clown Make-up Tutorial,” uploaded to YouTube on October 28, 2015 by SmiffysFancyDress, the channel of British costume company Smiffys. The video walks through a five-step process that transforms a plain-faced young man into a full clown — white base, exaggerated eyes and mouth, red nose, rainbow wig. A detail many meme-users miss is that a second person’s hands do the applying while the “clown” mostly sits still. Stills pulled from those escalating stages — a little makeup, more makeup, the finished clown — became the raw material for the format, because the picture sequence visually encodes the idea of getting progressively more ridiculous.
