The exchange is from iCarly, the Nickelodeon sitcom, in the episode “iMeet Fred,” which aired on February 16, 2009.

Spencer Shay — the older brother of the show’s lead, and its resident source of chaos — has just acquired an ostrich named Marvin. Asked “whatcha got there?”, he answers, without hesitation and while standing beside a very large bird:

“A smoothie.”

He is holding a smoothie. The answer is technically true and completely useless, and he offers it as though the question could not possibly have been about anything else.

It reached Reddit in late December 2018, where it went considerably larger: one post took 8,800+ upvotes in 48 hours and another 28,900+ in 24 hours. From there it became a standard format across meme and history subreddits.

The Tumblr-to-Reddit path with a three-year gap is a recurring pattern for fandom-built formats — Tumblr tends to develop the labelling convention, and Reddit later scales it.
