The line is from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, released on December 19, 2001.

Frodo Baggins, played by Elijah Wood, presses Gandalf — played by Ian McKellen — about his uncle Bilbo, and Gandalf declines to explain. Frodo, mildly exasperated but unwilling to push further, concedes:

“All right then, keep your secrets.”

The delivery is the appeal. There is no anger in it, only a small, faintly wounded acceptance — the tone of someone who has decided to stop asking but wants it noted that they were stonewalled.

The line is frequently misattributed to other characters, including Aragorn. It is Frodo, and the exchange is with Gandalf, early in the film at Bag End.

What it means / how it’s used

The phrase is a mock-offended reaction to being ignored or stonewalled. It is used when:

• A question in a group chat goes unanswered.
• Someone declines to explain something trivial.
• An account or company gives a non-answer.

It scaled on August 18, 2018, when a version posted to a Lord of the Rings meme community took over 18,000 points at 93% upvoted, and spread across Facebook, Twitter and Reddit through late 2018.
