Origin

The image has an origin most of its users would never guess. The stern, side-eyeing man is Mziwoxolo “Tau” Mogale, played by Rapulana Seiphemo, in season 2, episode 32 of Generations: The Legacy — a long-running South African soap opera.

The image was first used with the caption on January 23, 2016, when a South African Twitter user posted it in reply to a football club’s tweet. A second use two days later, on January 25, 2016, referenced a local footballer.

For years the image circulated in low resolution, ripped from a broadcast nobody could identify. That was only resolved on January 12, 2023, when a YouTube researcher tracked down the source episode and paid roughly $400 to obtain a proper copy — then uploaded the clip so the meme finally had a legible original.

What it means / how it’s used

The phrase expresses mock hurt at being overlooked. Something is listed, praised, or discussed, and an obvious candidate is left out — and that candidate objects.

It is used two ways:

• On behalf of something else — pointing out an omission from a list, ranking, or discussion.
• In the first person — the poster themselves feeling excluded from something they clearly belong to.

The expression is what makes it land. Seiphemo is not playing anger; he is playing wounded dignity, which is the exact register the phrase requires. A furious face would make it an accusation; this one makes it a complaint.

How it spread

Adoption was gradual and cross-continental. After its 2016 South African origin, the image circulated for over two years before reaching English-language meme communities at scale.

Its breakout came in October 2018. On October 15 and 16, 2018, Reddit versions took 9,900+ points and 37,000+ points with 250 comments, and from that point it became a standard reply image worldwide.

The path is a good illustration of how thoroughly the meme economy has decentralised. A frame from a South African soap opera became a globally recognised reaction image with essentially no one outside the country knowing what it was — and the source was only formally established seven years later, by a fan who paid for it out of pocket.

Its documentation story is also a small case study in meme archaeology — the growing practice of tracking down the origins of images that circulated for years without provenance. Most such images are never traced. This one was, because somebody cared enough to buy the tape.
