Origin

The Aliens meme crops a gesturing, wild-haired Giorgio Tsoukalos from the History Channel series Ancient Aliens, a show in which nearly every historical mystery gets attributed to extraterrestrial visitors. Paired with the caption ‘I’m not saying it was aliens… but it was aliens,’ the still spread as a reaction around 2011 to 2012. Tsoukalos’s emphatic open-handed pose and distinctive hair made the image instantly readable even without context. It became one of the definitive TV-screencap reaction memes of the early 2010s.

Meaning & usage

It is used to mock the impulse of leaping straight to the most absurd or far-fetched explanation for anything unexplained. Any everyday mystery — a missing sock, a weird noise, an unexpected coincidence — gets the alien treatment, delivered with mock-scholarly confidence.
