Origin

Matrix Morpheus uses a scene from The Matrix (1999) in which Morpheus, played by Laurence Fishburne, offers Neo a hard truth about the nature of reality. Seated across from Neo with his fingers steepled and a knowing look, the character became the anchor for an image-macro template. The “What if I told you…” caption format spread around 2012, during the golden age of advice-animal-style macros, and its top-and-bottom caption structure became instantly recognizable.

Meaning & usage

It delivers a smug reveal — sometimes a genuine “mind-blown” fact, but more often a sarcastic, painfully obvious one, such as “What if I told you… you don’t have to reply to every email instantly.” Morpheus’s steepled fingers and unreadable, knowing expression make any statement sound like forbidden wisdom, so the humor comes from dressing up the trivial or self-evident as a profound revelation.
