Origin

Buff Tom is not from a Tom and Jerry cartoon, which is the most common misconception about it. No episode features Tom with that physique.

It is fan art. An artist working as GeltyDrake drew a heavily muscled version of Tom and posted it to the art community Fur Affinity on April 13, 2014. The drawing keeps Tom’s face and colouring exactly as animated, and attaches them to an anatomically serious bodybuilder’s frame — which is why it reads as both instantly familiar and deeply wrong.

What it means / how it’s used

Buff Tom is the superior option in a comparison. He is placed opposite a weaker, sadder, or more pathetic figure, and the contrast makes the argument.

Its uses:

• Then-versus-now comparisons where the past is presented as stronger.
• Two options where one is obviously preferred.
• Fandom versions about a series’ earlier and later output.
• Self-aware versions where the “buff” option is objectively worse.

It functions almost identically to Buff Doge vs. Cheems, and the two formats are close relatives — both built on the same joke, that the strong version of a familiar character is inherently funnier than a new character would be.

The recognisability is what makes it work. A generic muscular figure means nothing; a muscular Tom carries eighty years of context about a cat who habitually loses.

How it spread

The artwork circulated in art communities for nearly four years before anyone made it a meme. It reached Reddit on March 15, 2018, posted to a subreddit for imagined video-game bosses.

Its first exploitable uses appeared in August 2018, with a version on August 6, 2018 taking over 4,400 upvotes. The real surge came in November 2018, when a post took over 46,400 upvotes within its first twelve hours, after which the format spread across 9GAG, Instagram and Twitter.

Tom and Jerry has been an unusually productive meme source in general — the series produced dozens of reaction stills — but this is a rare case where the meme is a drawing of the character rather than a frame from the show.

It is also a reminder of how often meme sources are misattributed. A large share of people using Buff Tom believe it is a screenshot, and the artist who actually drew it is rarely credited — a common outcome for art that escapes the community it was made in.
