Origin

The scene comes from the Regular Show episode “Grave Sight,” which premiered on Cartoon Network on May 9, 2011. Mordecai and Rigby are handing out flyers for a movie showing at the park. A passer-by approaches, sees the flyer coming, and executes a swerve so committed it reads as choreography — a full-body dodge to avoid so much as touching the paper.

The animation is what makes it work. The dodge is exaggerated to the point of absurdity, which turns a small everyday avoidance into a physical spectacle.

What it means / how it’s used

The format is an object-labeling template for evasion. The flyer is labelled with a duty, question, topic, or responsibility; the dodging figure is the person avoiding it; and the person offering the flyer is whoever is trying to make them deal with it.

It occupies a distinct niche. Most avoidance memes show someone ignoring a thing; this one shows active, athletic evasion — the subject has seen the obligation coming and taken measures. That makes it the right template for:

• Sidestepping a question in a conversation.
• Avoiding a task everyone knows is yours.
• Ducking a topic in a group chat.
• Any deliberate, visible refusal to engage.

How it spread

Like several formats of its era, it was built outside the English-speaking internet first. A Spanish-language Facebook meme-template group posted the first three-panel version on October 19, 2018, taking 870 likes in three months — modest, but the template was complete.

The first known English version appeared on Imgur on October 31, 2018, taking over 2,800 points and 120,000 views in three months. The breakout came on January 4, 2019, when the template was posted to r/MemeEconomy and took over 24,300 upvotes in five days. That post triggered a wave of edits across r/dankmemes and Regular Show fan communities.

The Facebook-template-group-to-Imgur-to-Reddit pipeline is a recurring pattern in this period. Template groups functioned as a supply chain, producing blank exploitables that English-language subreddits then popularised without much awareness of where they came from.

Regular Show ran from 2010 to 2017 and has aged into a steady source of meme material, helped by an animation style that favours extreme, readable poses. This is among its most-used exports.

The format remains in circulation because the behaviour it depicts is universal and had no good visual shorthand before. Being handed something you do not want, and physically avoiding it, is an experience nearly everyone has had — and the exaggerated animation makes the everyday version of it look heroic.
