The template comes from a genuine physics demonstration. On October 4th, 2009, University of Toronto physicist Stephen Morris uploaded “Domino Chain Reaction (geometric growth in action),” showing a row of 13 dominoes in which each tile is about one-and-a-half times larger than the one before. Morris’s demonstration built on a 1983 note by physicist Lorne Whitehead in the American Journal of Physics, which first calculated that a falling domino can topple another roughly one-and-a-half times its size. The first is a fingernail-sized sliver roughly 5mm tall; the last is about a meter tall and weighs some 45 kilograms (around 100 pounds). A tiny flick topples the first, and the cascade amplifies that energy an estimated two billion times by the time the final slab crashes down — a vivid illustration of how a small push can release progressively larger stores of potential energy.
