The scene is from 30 Rock, episode “The Tuxedo Begins” (season 6, episode 8), which aired on February 16, 2012. Steve Buscemi plays private detective Lenny Wosniak, who describes a past undercover assignment infiltrating a high school.

The flashback shows Buscemi — then 55 years old — approaching a group of teenagers wearing a backwards baseball cap, carrying a skateboard, and dressed in a t-shirt reading simply “Music Band.” He greets them:

“How do you do, fellow kids?”

The “Music Band” shirt is the detail that elevates it. It is the work of someone who understands that teenagers like music, and stopped researching there.

What it means / how it’s used

The image mocks adults and institutions performing youth badly. Its primary targets:

• Brands using slang incorrectly on social media.
• Corporate campaigns aimed at a demographic they clearly have not met.

Its institutional home arrived on August 2, 2014, when three Reddit users founded r/FellowKids, a subreddit devoted entirely to collecting examples of brands and organisations failing to talk to young people. It grew to over 194,000 subscribers within three years and gave the meme something most formats never get: a permanent archive of the exact behaviour it exists to mock.
