Origin

The reaction uses a single frame from the SpongeBob SquarePants episode ‘The Smoking Peanut,’ which first aired on March 8, 2001. In the shot, SpongeBob is in his living-room armchair holding a TV remote, wearing a half-lidded, deadpan expression. There is a well-known twist: in the actual scene SpongeBob is sitting DOWN, not standing up — the meme reads the frame backwards, treating a character settling into a chair as one rising to leave. That playful misreading is central to the joke. (Note that the character is SpongeBob himself, not Patrick Star.)
