Origin

The frog came first. On December 10, 2014, a Tumblr user posted a photograph of a Budgett’s frog (Lepidobatrachus laevis) — a squat, wide-mouthed South American amphibian with a permanently startled expression — titled simply “Wednesday.” It took over 60,000 notes.

Budgett’s frogs are genuinely alarming animals. When threatened they inflate, open their mouths impossibly wide, and emit a loud, high-pitched scream that sounds disconcertingly like a person.

The meme proper arrived when a Vine creator combined the two. In a six-second clip he announces “It is Wednesday, my dudes” and then delivers the frog’s scream himself, at full volume, directly into the camera. It took over 15 million loops, 70,000 revines and 144,000 likes.

What it means / how it’s used

The phrase is a midweek ritual. It is posted on Wednesdays, for no reason other than that it is Wednesday, and the joke is entirely in the observance.

Its function is closer to a calendar event than a punchline. The internet has a small set of these — recurring posts tied to a date that people make because the date has arrived — and this one owns Wednesday.

Its uses:

• Straight Wednesday announcements.
• Recreations of the scream in costume or in unlikely locations.
• Edits inserting the frog into other footage.
• Increasingly elaborate annual variations from the original creator.

How it spread

It became a genuine weekly institution across 2015 and 2016, sustained by the creator posting new versions — different costumes, different settings, the same scream — and by an enormous volume of imitations. By March 2016 there were well over a hundred distinct versions on Vine alone, and dedicated pages and hashtag communities on iFunny and Facebook.

Vine shut down in 2017, and the format survived the platform’s death, which very few Vine memes managed. It moved to Twitter, then to TikTok, and it is still posted every Wednesday a decade later.

It also introduced a very large number of people to the Budgett’s frog, an animal that would otherwise be known to almost nobody, and whose real defensive scream is considerably more unsettling than any imitation of it.
