The image is a film still from The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, the Coen Brothers’ anthology western released by Netflix in 2018. Netflix put the trailer online on September 12, 2018, and the film premiered on the service that November. In the segment “Near Algodones,” James Franco plays an unnamed outlaw who is caught, sentenced, and marched to the gallows — for the second time in the story. Standing on the scaffold beside another condemned man who is visibly falling apart, Franco’s cowboy glances over and asks, with the flat calm of a man who has done this before, “First time?”

The joke lands because of the asymmetry: one man is experiencing the worst moment of his life, and the other is mildly bored by it.
