Knickers the Steer

Origin

Knickers was a Holstein-Friesian steer in Western Australia, and he was enormous. He stood 194 centimetres at the shoulder — over six feet — and weighed roughly 1,400 kilograms, which is around 3,000 pounds. He was, by a considerable margin, the largest animal in his herd.

He came to public attention for a mundane reason. His size meant he could not be processed at an abattoir — no facility could handle an animal that large — so he was going to live out his life on the farm instead. Australian broadcaster ABC reported the story on October 29, 2018, and it went international a month later.

What it means / how it’s used

Knickers became a reaction image for being conspicuously oversized among normal-sized peers. The photographs that circulated show him standing in a field surrounded by ordinary cattle who come up to roughly his shoulder, entirely unbothered.

His uses:

Within hours he was covered by CNN, USA Today and the BBC, which is an unusual amount of international attention for a steer. The story had everything a light news item needs: a striking photograph, a simple explanation, and an outcome in which nothing bad happens to the animal.

That last part mattered. A large share of the coverage emphasised that his size had spared him — a rare viral animal story with an unambiguously happy framing.

He also arrived at the exact moment the “absolute unit” format needed a mascot. A great many memes are built by attaching an existing joke to a new image; in this case the joke had been circulating for months and a very large Australian steer walked into it.
