Origin

The frame is from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, released in the United States on December 14, 2018. In the film’s climax, the Kingpin — an enormous, near-cubic figure of a man — charges at Miles Morales along the side of a building. The animation renders the run with heavy motion blur and a severely distorted perspective, so the Kingpin appears to be barrelling directly out of the screen.

The film’s whole visual language is built on comic-book printing techniques — halftone dots, chromatic aberration, deliberate frame-rate manipulation — and this shot pushes all of it at once. The result is a frame that looks less like a character running and more like an unstoppable object arriving.

Running Kingpin is the reaction for being chased down, literally or otherwise. It represents something large, fast, and impossible to outrun.

From there it circulated widely across Instagram and Reddit through 2019. Its most common configuration pairs an object-labelled Kingpin with a small, unaware figure — the poster, or whatever is about to be overtaken.

The five-month gap between the film’s release and the meme’s peak follows the standard blockbuster pattern: theatrical release generates quotes, but templates require the clean frames that arrive with digital and streaming availability.
