The source photograph is entirely ordinary. On November 25, 2012, Jonathan Cruz posted a picture to the pet-photo site Cutest Paw captioned “My friend’s kitten chilling with some xbox.” It shows a small kitten with both front paws resting on an Xbox 360 controller, a man in a Space Invaders t-shirt seated behind it.

In the original, the kitten looks neutral — possibly curious. The meme version does not use the original face.

What it means / how it’s used

The image became a reaction for defeat while gaming: losing a match, failing a level, watching a run collapse, or the specific melancholy of continuing to play something that is no longer fun.

Its modern form is a composite. Sometime later, editors replaced the kitten’s face with the Crying Cat face — the digitally added teary eyes and downturned mouth that became one of the internet’s most-used emotional overlays. That combination is what most people recognise: a small animal holding a controller, visibly devastated.

Its meme career proper began much later. The Crying Cat composite first appeared on r/sadcats on June 10, 2019, taking over 1,400 upvotes. Then on August 4, 2019, a version posted to r/dankmemes took over 103,000 upvotes and 500 comments, which turned it into a standard gaming reaction image essentially overnight.

The seven-year gap between the original photo and the meme is worth noting. The picture sat in circulation for most of a decade, waiting for the Crying Cat overlay to exist and for someone to combine the two.
