The line is from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, released on December 19, 2001. Saruman — played by Christopher Lee — has imprisoned Gandalf (Ian McKellen) at Orthanc after Gandalf refused to join him. When Gandalf escapes, Saruman delivers the line as a verdict on that refusal:

“So you have chosen… death.”

Lee’s delivery is the reason it works. He plays it with complete gravity, and the pause before the final word is what makes the sentence quotable.
