Origin

The frame comes from the Tom and Jerry short “Down Beat Bear,” released in 1956 by MGM. Tom is sitting with a newspaper when something makes him look up — eyes narrowed, head tilted, an expression of pure guarded suspicion. He is not surprised; he is assessing.

Hanna-Barbera’s Tom and Jerry shorts have proven an unusually deep well of reaction images, because the animation style relies on large, unambiguous facial acting to carry dialogue-free comedy. Every emotion has to be readable in one frame by design, which is exactly what a reaction image needs.

What it means / how it’s used

The still works in two distinct modes.

As a reaction image, Tom’s look conveys suspicion, discomfort, or the moment you realise something is off about what you just heard. It is a “wait a minute” face.

As an exploitable, the newspaper is the payload: its contents get replaced with a headline, a screenshot, or an image, and Tom becomes the reader reacting to it. This version does more work, because it packages both a statement and a reaction in one frame.

Captioned versions appeared in early 2017, and the format spent roughly a year circulating without much momentum. A notable variation appeared on the meme site Memedroid on May 20, 2017.

The breakout came in July 2018. On July 6, 2018, two separate versions on r/dankmemes took 2,900+ and 3,900+ upvotes, and the format was formally catalogued the same day. Through the rest of 2018 the newspaper-swap version became the dominant form, and it entered general rotation across Reddit, Twitter, and iFunny.

Tom and Jerry’s broader meme renaissance happened in the same window. Between 2017 and 2020 a whole set of stills from the series — Tom’s various expressions of alarm, smugness, and despair — became standard reaction images, part of a wider revival of mid-century animation as meme source material.
