Unsettled Tom

Origin

Unsettled Tom is a deliberately crude, wobbly redraw of a close-up of Tom, the cat from Tom and Jerry, wearing a wide-eyed, deeply worried and uneasy expression. The drawing did not start as a standalone reaction image — it originated in “Tails Gets Trolled,” the infamously rough-hewn webcomic by the artist known as Lazerbot, and was posted to DeviantArt on May 10, 2012. The scratchy, off-model art style, which is the entire point of the meme, comes straight from that comic. The redrawn panel was clipped out and began circulating on 4chan’s /co/ board as a wordless reaction image by January 2013, with early instances appearing around January 9, 2013. Tails Gets Trolled, begun in 2011, is a notoriously amateurish Sonic-fan comic whose sincere but shaky artwork spawned a whole crop of reaction images, and Tom’s stressed cameo became its most famous export.

What it means and how it’s used

The image is used to react to shocking, creepy, suspicious or off-putting behavior — the visual equivalent of a slow, uncomfortable side-eye. It conveys wordless discomfort at something the viewer would rather not have seen or heard: a conversation taking an alarming turn, an unsettling hypothetical, or a comment that overshares. The exaggeratedly concerned face, rendered in a clumsy hand-drawn style, does all the talking in place of a written reply. The tone hovers between mild alarm and morbid curiosity. Because the face is so generically alarmed, it slots into almost any awkward or disturbing context, which is a large part of why it caught on so quickly.

How it spread

After years as a niche imageboard reaction, Unsettled Tom went supernova on Reddit in early 2019. Redditor inactive_meme posted a captioned version to r/dankmemes on March 3, 2019, and within roughly 48 hours — peaking around March 7, 2019 — the subreddit was flooded with Unsettled Tom posts. It arrived as part of a broader wave of intentionally low-fidelity, badly redrawn cartoon reactions that dominated meme culture at the time. The redraw fit the late-2010s taste for ‘deep-fried’ and deliberately ugly memes, where clumsy artwork read as funnier than any polished edit.
