On June 9, 2019, CD Projekt Red closed its Cyberpunk 2077 segment at Microsoft’s E3 press conference with a trailer whose final scene revealed a character voiced and performance-captured by Keanu Reeves — the rocker-turned-revolutionary Johnny Silverhand. The line that closed the trailer became the meme:

“Wake the [expletive] up, Samurai. We have a city to burn.”

Reeves then walked out on stage. When an audience member shouted “You’re breathtaking!”, he pointed back and told the entire hall they were breathtaking — a moment that went viral immediately. The fan’s own tweet about it took over 5,000 retweets and 17,400 likes within 20 hours, and CD Projekt Red publicly promised him a free Collector’s Edition of the game.

What it means / how it’s used

The line is used as a dramatic rallying cry — an over-the-top summons to action, applied to things that require no dramatic summons at all. Waking up for work, starting a group project, or beginning a chore all become, in the meme’s framing, the start of an insurgency.

The “You’re breathtaking” moment operates separately, as an all-purpose compliment. It became attached to Reeves’ broader public persona, which by mid-2019 had turned into a full internet phenomenon of its own — a period in which he was widely and affectionately treated as the internet’s favourite celebrity.

How it spread

Both moments went viral within hours of the presentation. A Reddit post featuring the reveal took over 40,300 upvotes in 15 hours, and a meme built on the quote took over 68,200 upvotes in 13 hours on r/dankmemes.

The E3 2019 presentation is now remembered as one of the most effective game reveals ever staged — and, in retrospect, as a high-water mark. Cyberpunk 2077 released on December 10, 2020 to a widely reported troubled launch, with severe performance problems on older consoles, an apology from the studio, a refund programme, and the game’s temporary removal from the PlayStation Store.

That history changed how the memes read. What began as unironic hype became, for a period, a joke about expectations — the line quoted alongside images of the game’s bugs. The studio’s later recovery work and the success of the Edgerunners anime softened the tone again, and the quote is now used more or less straight.
