The incident took place on March 27, 2022, during the live broadcast of the 94th Academy Awards.

Presenting an award, the comedian Chris Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head, comparing her to the title character of G.I. Jane. Pinkett Smith — who has spoken publicly about living with alopecia — was visibly unamused.

Will Smith walked from his seat onto the stage, slapped Rock across the face, returned to his seat, and shouted at him twice to keep his wife’s name out of his mouth. The audio was censored on the US broadcast but aired uncensored internationally.

Smith won the Best Actor award roughly forty minutes later.
